I base the lessons on the fact that acting is about being believable, and it is very obvious to me when someone is believable or not. This is very obvious even when I am speaking with someone on the phone.
I teach my students all of the same basic principles like Scene Interpretation and how to figure out what is important in the script. After analyzing the scene, I teach actors about Evoking Emotion and Creating an Objective. I teach students how to evoke emotion in their body: all emotions, from anger to joy. I also teach students how to figure out what the character should be thinking about in the scene – the objective, and how to implement that into the scene, so that the actor stays focused on the scene, and doesn’t think about how he/she should look or sound. Instead, the actor is thinking the actual thoughts of the character. From there, I give them a scene or a monologue that they run over the phone with me. I suggest the students get a speaker phone or headset so that they don’t have to hold the telephone when they are working with me. I listen to the scene, critique it, and give them notes on how to improve the scene and make it more believable, interesting, and tell the story better. I can do all of this without having to be with them in person. Then, I also teach them about Marketing. I teach actors all of the principles of marketing yourself as an actor; from creating a resume’ to building a demo reel. I teach actors what they have to do in order to increase their chances of getting a good agent or manager, and how to meet casting directors.
